Interaction of 1-butyl-4-methylpyridinium bromide with sodium polystyrene sulfonate in aqueous solutions

In this work, viscosity of aqueous solutions of sodium polystyrene sulfonate (NaPSS) in the presence of 1-butyl-4-methylpyridinium bromide([BMPyr]Br) were measured at T= 288.15, 298.15 and 308.15 K.The measured viscosities were correlated with Wolf’s equation to obtain the intrinsic viscosity of NaPSS. The results reveal that addition of ionic liquid screens the electrostatic repulsions between charges along the backbone of the polyelectrolyte chain. Consequently, the intrinsic viscosity of NaPSS decreases by increasing the concentration of ionic liquid. The UV-Vis spectra of NaPSS show that absorption intensity of NaPSS was decreased with addition of ionic liquids. The conformation of NaPSS changes in the presence of ionic liquid; therefore the value of electric multipole moment decreases. Consequently, the absorption intensity of NaPSS was decreased with the addition of ionic liquid.
